The Toffees were originally thought to be keen on another Chelsea frontman - Saloman Kalou - but were put off by the £10 million price tag. However, the performances of Kalou's club-mate Sturridge over the last six months have caught the eye of David Moyes.
In a bid for regular first-team football, England U-21 international Sturridge joined Bolton Wanderers on loan in January. In his stint at the Reebok he netted an impressive eight goals in just twelve appearances before being named in the team of the tournament at the 2011 European U-21 Championships.
The 21-year-old has stated that he is keen to challenge for a first team place under new manager Andre Villas-Boas, although he has received no assurances from the new Portuguese manager. Everton hope to take persuade the player that he would be better served playing regularly at Goodison Park rather than warming the Stamford Bridge bench, something that would be inevitable should the London Blues sign one of either Neymar or Sergio Aguero, who remain as high-profile targets.
StickyToffee Verdict: Would be a major coup and an excellent addition to the squad. Although unlikely, stranger things have happened. Julien Faubert once played for Real Madrid.
