Premier League duo Everton and Newcastle are on alert after Reading boss Brian McDermott dropped a hint that he was ready to offload prized asset Shane Long, according to The Mirror.
McDermott said: "Shane is the best striker in the Championship. He could play for anyone in the Premier League. I said to him in January that if we failed to be promoted I would do my best for him in terms of finding him a Premier League club, if it was good for the club and for him.
"Shane is not desperate to walk away. His mum comes to every game and he is well looked after."
Long, 24, scored 25 goals in all competitions last year and Reading are said to value him at £7 million.
StickyToffee Verdict: A good player at Championship level but I don't feel we can spend £7 million on a player unproven in the Premier League. Yes, Jermaine Beckford has adapted well (and he jumped up two leagues), but he was not as much of a gamble as he was a free transfer.
