Duffy Joins Scunthorpe On Loan

Teenage Everton centre-back Shane Duffy has signed for League One side Scunthorpe United on an initial month-long loan deal.

Duffy spent a month on loan at Burnley last season but only played one game at Turf Moor in his stint there.

The 19-year-old began his career in Ireland with youth side Foyle Harps before joining Everton in November 2008. He made his Everton debut as a substitute in the 0-1 win over AEK Athens and followed that appearance up with a 90-minute appearance against BATE Borisov.

And the youngster has now been sent to Glanford Park for a month-long loan deal that could be extended further if it proves a success.

Yakubu Poised To Complete Blackburn Switch

Everton striker Yakubu is very close to signing for Blackburn Rovers, BBC Sport Africa understands.

The Nigerian international, who spent part of last season on loan at Leicester City, looks set to sign for Rovers before the 11:00pm deadline.

Rovers boss Steve is Kean on the player (see what I did there?) and is confident of signing the 28-year-old, who has previously played for Portsmouth and Middlesbrough in the top-flight.

Blackburn are negotiating a deal with the Yak's agent, Pini Zahavi.

Beckford Bid Accepted

Everton have agreed a £4m fee with Leicester City for the sale of striker Jermaine Beckford, according to BBC Radio Leicester.

Beckford, who joined Everton on a free transfer last year, scored 10 goals in his debut Premier League season to finish the campaign as the club's joint top scorer.

Leicester, along with Southampton and Blackburn Rovers, had made their interest in the player known and were believed to have tabled a £2m bid.

That was rejected by Everton, but Foxes boss Sven Goran Eriksson has returned with a £4m offer, which has been accepted.

The deal is not done yet, however, as the player still needs to complete a medical and agree personal terms with the Midlands outfit.

Everton To Sign Stracqualursi

Everton have agreed a deal to sign Argentinian striker Denis Stracqualursi on loan from Tigre.

The news was broken by various respected sources on Twitter amid rumours that both Yakubu and Jermaine Beckford could be on the way out of Goodison Park.

The player is currently undergoing a medical at Everton and looks set to join on a season-long loan.

23-year-old Stracqualursi scored 22 goals in 35 appearances for Tigres last season, a feat which made him the Argentine league's top scorer.

His form attracted the attention of Espanyol, Fiorentina and a number of German clubs, but his agent Joseph Cysterzpiller has agreed terms with Everton.

Rumour: Everton Chase French Forward

Reports in France this morning suggest that Everton are one of a number of clubs interested in a loan move for out of favour Marseille striker André-Pierre Gignac.

A talented forward, Gignac is in high demand and Everton may have to beat St Etienne, Lorient, Fulham, Blackburn, Genoa and Olympiakos to his signature.

It's unlikely that we would sign him, then, but the rumour has been published throughout the French media, including on French football website lefigaro.fr.

The reports suggest that Marseille may want to offload Gignac to make way for Juventus striker Amauari.

Rumour: Deadline Day Deal For Dutchman

Everton may move for Real Madrid's Dutch midfielder Royston Drenthe, according to talkSPORT's Graham Hunter.

Drenthe, a Dutch international, moved to Real Madrid in 2007 but has fallen out of favour at the Bernabeu and spent last season on loan at Spanish second division side Hércules.

Graham Hunter thinks that Drenthe is "a good signing waiting to happen because he's low cost, decent quality and ready to take the next step in his career."

Hunter added "Everton have been in to have a look at him, whether that deal takes place or not, I'm not yet sure. But that's something to definitely watch for."

Norwich City Reserves 2-1 Everton Reserves

A youthful Everton reserve side lost 2-1 to Norwich at Carrow Road on Tuesday night in their third fixture of the season.

The visitors were missing a host of players for various reasons. Both regular centre backs Shane Duffy and Shkodran Mustafi were away on international duty with Ireland U21 and Germany U19 respectively.

Nigerian duo Yakubu and Joseph Yobo, who had both featured in the second string's opening two games, were also absent form the squad. Yobo is expected to complete his protracted transfer to Fenerbahce tomorrow, whilst Yakubu could also be on his way out.

That meant that coach Alan Stubbs had a young set of players from which to choose from and the selected starting eleven was: Davies, Browning, Nsiala, Dier, Bidwell, Orenuga, Lundstram, Forshaw, Garbutt, Baxter, McAleny.

Everton took the lead just before half time when, after Norwich goalkeeper Remi Matthews had made a smart double save, midfielder John Lundstram scored from range.

In front of a crowd that included ex-Everton and current Norwich forward James Vaughan, the canaries fought hard in the second half and grabbed a deserved equaliser on 73 minutes through Richard Brindley.

Minutes later the home side won a penalty when Andrew Surman went over in the box. The same player picked himself up and took the spot-kick, but Adam Davies in the Everton goal saved the effort - just as Tim Howard had done for the senior side at Ewood Park on Saturday.

The fixture looked to be heading for a draw but Norwich stole all three points in injury time through Aaron Wilbraham and Everton left empty-handed.

Rumour: Beckford In Demand

Blackburn Rovers will attempt to lure Jermaine Beckford to Ewood Park after missing out on Yakubu, according to clicklancashire.com.

Yakubu snubbed a move to Ewood Park and Rovers are now rumoured to be interested in ex-Leeds striker Beckford.

Blackburn join Southampton, Leicester City and Nottingham Forest in the hunt for Beckford but it is unlikely that Everton will sell, especially with so little time left to find a replacement.

Rovers recently missed out on Hoffenheim's Vedad Ibesevic, something that has lead to them weighing up a move for the Everton man.

Yak Snubs Blackburn

Everton striker Yakubu has turned down an opportunity to join Blackburn Rovers, according to Sky Sports.

The Nigerian international, who spent part of last term on loan at Championship side Leicester City, has slipped down the pecking order at Everton and has even turned out for the reserves in recent weeks.

Leicester had initially been keen to purchase Yakubu outright but the deal has stalled and Yakubu has remained with Everton all Summer.

A switch elsewhere was expected but time is running out for a move during the current transfer window. Blackburn were prepared to offer him a way out of Everton, but the striker has snubbed their advances and chosen to remain on Merseyside for the time being.

The Three Lions travel to Bulgaria for the first of the two Euro qualifiers on September 2 before facing Wales at Wembley four days later.

Baines and Jagielka are rapidly becoming regular members of the England squad - let's hope they are both still Everton players by the time England play!

Blackburn Rovers 0-1 Everton

It was a case of daylight robbery at Ewood Park this afternoon as a last-minute Mikel Arteta spot-kick stole all three points - this after Blackburn duo Hoilett and Formica had both been unsuccessful with penalties of their own.

Everton have goalkeeper Tim Howard to thank for the undeserved victory - the American custodian saved the first spot-kick, saw the second hit the post and made a number of crucial saves to deny Rovers.

Everton had performed very poorly throughout but referee Lee Mason handed us a golden opportunity to punish Blackburn for their missed chances in the dying moments. Marouane Fellaini was felled in the aftermath of a Phil Neville long throw and Mason pointed to the spot for the third time in the game.

Spaniard Arteta kept a cool head under huge pressure to send the travelling support behind the goal into delirium. A performance as bad as I can remember but a fantastic result.

* * *

David Moyes named a 4-5-1 formation with the line lead by lone striker and midweek goalscorer Victor Anichebe. Tim Howard, rested for Wednesday's win over Sheffield United, took up his usual goalkeeping position behind the regular back four of Leighton Baines, Sylvain Distin, Phil Jagielka and Phil Neville.

A five man midfield consisted of Ross Barkley, Marouane Fellaini, Leon Osman, John Heitinga and Mikel Arteta with Victor Anichebe on his own up front. Louis Saha was not included in the squad - which, I assume, is down to injury - and Jermaine Beckford and Tim Cahill were left on the bench. Jack Rodwell missed out due to illness.

The first half was a totally drab affair notable only for David Dunn's shot, which hit the inside of Howard's right hand post and bounced agonisingly across goal to safety.

Everton's best moment of the opening period was Leon Osman's header from Ross Barkley's right-wing cross, although it failed to trouble Paul Robinson in the Blackburn goal.

David Dunn and Morten Gamst Pedersen both suffered injuries for the hosts, with Mauro Formica and Radosav Petrovic both having to be introduced before half-time.

Half-time: Blackburn Rovers 0-0 Everton

Whilst the first period was a frankly dreadful watch, the second was a bizarre one. Everton started after the interval as if they had just woken up, and conceded a penalty in the first minute after half-time.

Ross Barkley slipped inside the area and Mauro Formica fell over the youngster's trailing leg. Formica certainly made a concerted effort to fall over the outstretched limb but referee Mason didn't hesitate in pointing to the spot.

Tim Howard made a great penalty save low to his left hand side from Junior Hoilett and Everton somehow managed to clear the danger. Undeterred, Blackburn kept on coming and the visitors were struggling to get out of their own half.

The relentless pressure created a few good chances for Blackburn but each time Tim Howard was up to the task. Instinctive saves from Samba and then Formica kept Everton level - although the pressure culminated in another penalty just a few minutes later.

Formica won it after a combination of Jagielka and Distin bundled him over and the same player stepped up to take it. Formica went the opposite way to Hoilett and had Howard beaten... but not the post.

David Moyes withdrew Ross Barkley in favour of the vastly experienced Tim Cahill, a substitution that helped Everton push further forward. Leighton Baines stung the hands of Paul Robinson with a fierce shot from an acute angle.

The same player then turned provider as he teed up Marouane Fellaini, who should really have hit the target with an effort from the edge of the penalty area.

However, Everton were soon on the back foot again and Howard had to be alert to save from Formica. We were hanging on to a point as substitute David Goodwillie then saw his effort clip the top of the crossbar after Formica and Hoilett had carved open our defence with worrying ease.

In stoppage time Everton were awarded a spot-kick of their own when, following a long throw by captain Phil Neville, Chris Samba bundled over Marouane Fellaini just inside the area. It was a dubious penalty but we did not care a jot.

Mikel Arteta, who had looked off the pace in midfield, stepped up, kept composed and rifled the kick into the right hand corner. Unbelievable.

Robbery, theft, luck. But 3 vital points.

StickyToffee Player Ratings: Howard 10, Baines 6, Distin 5, Jagielka 4, Neville 4, Arteta 5, Heitinga 5, Fellaini 4, Osman 5, Barkley 5, Anichebe 4.

Subs: Cahill 5, Bilyaletdinov 5, Beckford 3.

Heitinga Called Up

Everton defender John Heitinga has been called up to the Dutch squad for Euro 2012 qualifiers against San Marino and Finland.

Bizarrely, Holland overtook Spain in the FIFA World rankings earlier this week and are now rated as the best team in the world.

Looking to extend their 100% record in Group E, Holland face San Marino in Eindhoven on September 2 before travelling to Finland on September 6.

Heitinga will hope to add to his impressive 66 international caps. The full squad is as follows:

Blackburn Rovers v Everton Preview

Having managed to get our season off to an even worse start than usual at home to QPR last weekend, we now travel to Ewood Park to face the team that beat us on the opening weekend last year, Blackburn Rovers.

In August 2010 a rare Tim Howard error (literally) handed Blackburn three early Premier League points - points which proved to be oh so vital for Rovers come the back end of the season.

Since the end of last season, Evertonians have endured a painful Summer and the loss to newly-promoted QPR did little to apease frustrations. A comfortable midweek cup victory over Sheffield United saved our blushes for the time being, but already in the season the game at Blackburn looks a huge one.

A pair of losses to QPR and Blackburn - two of the pre-season favourites for relegation - would signal an even worse start than usual. It's not a 'must-win game' but frustrations will continue to grow if we come away empty-handed.

Injury wise, there are no fresh concerns for Everton - although there is a lengthy injury list, especially considering the season is still very much in its infancy. Seamus Coleman (ankle) and Magaye Gueye (broken toe) are definite absentees, whilst Tim Cahill (illness) and Jermaine Beckford (knee) both missed Wednesday's Carling Cup tie.

Marouane Fellaini and Mikel Arteta are both nearing full fitness after completing ninety minutes against Sheffield United. Louis Saha also played a part in Wednesday's win although he has had Evertonians worried this morning after tweeting: "I had better mornings #gutted".

There is no indication yet if the bad news is injury related but, if it is, I'm surprised he's lasted two games to be honest. Let's hope he's fully fit - and he was just gutted about not having any milk to accompany his cheerios.

Diniyar Bilyaletdinov is available for selection again after serving his suspension, and so taking everything into account I predict that the team will look something like:

Blackburn should have their man-mountain of a centre-half, Chris Samba, fit again for the game, whilst David 'Junior' Hoilett and new striker David Goodwillie are my ones to watch.

STAT'S LIFE
Welcome to stat set no. 3 of the 2011/2012 campaign!
  • Only one of Everton's last seven league games has seen more than 2.5 goals.
  • Blackburn have the worst shooting accuracy of any Premier League side so far this season - just 22% of their efforts have been on target.
  • These two founding members of the football league first met in November 1888, when Rovers prevailed 3-0.
  • Tim Cahill's current run of 11 league matches without a goal is his longest drought in six years.
  • Blackburn have won just 2 of their last 16 matches and have not kept a clean sheet in their last ten.
_________________________________________________

With both sides having showcased their defensive frailties so far this season, I'm going to predict that both sides will score. I can't see Blackburn netting more than one against us though, and so I'm going to plump (and hope) for an away win.

StickyToffee Prediction: Blackburn Rovers 1-2 Everton

Araz In Line To Face Teammates

Winger Araz Abdullayev has been called up to the Azerbaijan U21 squad for next Thursday's opening Euro 2013 Qualifier with England, meaning that he could face future clubmates Jack Rodwell and Ross Barkley.

17-year-old Abdullayev, who is set for a loan move to Greek side PAOK, is Azerbaijan's youngest ever player having made his debut for the senior team at the age of just 16 years 4 months.

He is now back in Bernhard Lippert's Under-21 squad, who will hope to avenge their 7-0 loss to England when the sides last met in 2009.

The full 22-man squad is: Osman Umarov, Salahat Aghaye, Emil Balayev, Tarlan Guliyev, Gara Garayev, Novruz Mammadov, Farrukh Rahimov, Mikhail Zaytsev, Haji Ahmadov, Mirhuseyn Seyidov, Eshgin Guliyev, Emin Mustafayev, Javid Imamverdiyev, Kamil Nurahmadov, Araz Abdullayev, Amit Guluzada, Badavi Huseynov, Aleksandr Gross, Tural Isgandarov, Orkhan Hasanov, Jihan Ozkara, Ali Gokdamir.

Third Kit Revealed

Everton have today revealed the new third kit for the 2011/12 campaign.

The shirt colour is listed as 'glacier marl' (that's silver to you and I), whilst the shorts are navy and the socks grey. The kit will be worn for selected away fixtures throughout the 2011/12 campaign, the first of which will be the Chelsea game on October 15th.

Blues defender Johnny Heitinga modelled the kit, saying: "The kit is a great colour and I really like the style. I'm looking forward to wearing it and I'm sure the fans will love it too."

Take it away, Johnny...

Rumour: Bolton, Everton To Watch Trotter

Premier League duo Bolton and Everton will send scouts to watch promising Millwall midfielder Liam Trotter this weekend, according to the Daily Mail.

Trotter, 23, was watched by Arsenal last weekend as Millwall lost 1-0 to Southampton, whilst Bolton are interested in signing him as it seems target Shaun Wright-Phillips is leaning towards a move to QPR.

Should the player move to Goodison, he'd be following the career path of a certain Tim Cahill. And he hasn't done too badly...

Rumour: Everton In Ridiculous Link For Senegal Striker

Everton and Arsenal are interested in signing Freiburg's prolific Senegalese striker Papiss Cisse, according to talkSPORT.

Spot the point where this rumour falls flat on its face.

"Cisse, 26, is rated one of the best strikers in the Bundesliga and has scored 32 times in the last 18 months, including four in just three appearances so far this season. FREIBURG ARE LOOKING FOR AROUND £13.5M FOR HIS SIGNATURE."

Did you spot it?

Cisse has been linked with ourselves, Blackburn, Arsenal and Fulham and recently said "I have a contract with Freiburg but I want to play at the highest level. The Premier League is a big league and I want to leave."

Fellaini Called Up To Belgium Squad

Marouane Fellaini has been called up to the Belgium national side for September's games against Azerbaijan and the USA.

Coach Georges Leekens has named a 24-man squad for the Euro 2012 qualifier against Azerbaijan in Baku (September 2) and a subsequent friendly with the United States in Brussels (September 6).

Fellaini, who last night played his first full match since suffering an injury against Sunderland in February, will hope to face clubmate Tim Howard in the USA friendly.

The full Belgium squad is: Thibaut Courtois, Jean-Francois Gillet, Simon Mignolet, Toby Alderweireld, Vincent Kompany, Nicholas Lombaerts, Denis Odoi, Daniel Van Buyten, Jelle Van Damme, Thomas Vermaelen, Jan Vertonghen, Moussa Dembele, Marouane Fellaini, Eden Hazard, David Hubert, Dries Mertens, Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe, Timmy Simons, Jelle Vossen, Axel Witsel, Igor de Camargo, Romelu Lukaku, Marvin Ogunjimi, Bjorn Vleminckx.

Yobo, Anichebe In Nigeria Squad

Joseph Yobo and Victor Anichebe have both been named in the Nigeria squad for the Super Eagles' upcoming games against Madagascar and Argentina.

Coach Samson Siasia has named a 25-man squad for the two fixtures. As expected it includes captain Joseph Yobo, who is reportedly on the verge of a move to Turkish giants Fenerbahce, and Victor Anichebe, who scored in Everton's Carling Cup triumph over Sheffield United last night.

Nigeria will play an Africa Cup of Nations Qualifier in Madagascar on September 4th before flying to Bangladesh for a friendly with Argentina on September 6th. I hear Argentina have this kid called Messi. He's going to be big, apparently.

The full Nigeria squad is: Vincent Enyeama, Dele Aiyenugba, Chigozie Agbim, Chibuzor Okonkwo, Elderson Echiejile, Joseph Yobo, Yusuf Ayila, Efe Ambrose, Dele Adeleye, Danny Shittu, Joel Obi, John Mikel Obi, Fengor Ogude, Kalu Uche, Nosa Igiebor, Solomon Okoronkwo, Ahmed Musa, Obinna Nsofor, Victor Anichebe, Ike Uche, Osaze Odemwingie, Emmanuel Emenike, Peter Utaka, Chinedu Obasi, Brown Ideye.

Everton 3-1 Sheffield United

It is hard to remember a Carling Cup second round victory greeted with as much relief as the 3-1 triumph over third-tier side Sheffield United last night.

Yet that was the overriding feeling after goals from Richard Cresswell (OG), Victor Anichebe (no, really) and Mikel Arteta saw us come back from a goal down to progress to the next round.

After Saturday's shock defeat to QPR it was vital that we responded with a cup victory and a strong team was named for the clash, which was played out in front of just 17,173 spectators. That total was the lowest for a competitive match at Goodison for over 12 years - and a clear sign of unrest amongst Evertonians following a frustrating Summer.

Jan Mucha was granted his third competitive start in Everton colours whilst John Heitinga and Tony Hibbert replaced Sylvain Distin and Phil Neville in the other changes to the back five from the loss to QPR.

To fans' frustration, the midfield consisted of five players, but it was an attacking and creative one. Marouane Fellaini and Jack Rodwell sat a little deeper with the exciting trio of Mikel Arteta, Leon Osman and Ross Barkley charged with creating opportunities for lone striker Victor Anichebe.

Tim Howard, Phil Neville, Louis Saha and Sylvain Distin started on the bench alongside a trio of youngsters; Apostolos Vellios, James Wallace and Jose Baxter.

Everton enjoyed much the better of the opening exchanges but fell behind on 28 minutes when Richard Cresswell, like Tommy Smith had done for QPR, finished smartly after poor defending by Everton.

Cresswell found himself on the scoresheet once again just minutes later, but unfortunately for him he had registered an own goal. Jack Rodwell's effort from a tight angle was parried by Steve Simonsen onto the despairing Cresswell, who could only watch as the ball crossed the line and allowed Evertonians to breath a sigh of relief.

Everton assumed their early dominance and registered two quick-fire goals that ultimately put the game beyond doubt. Victor Anichebe applied a neat flick to Ross Barkley's cross-cum-shot to give Everton the lead and five minutes later Mikel Arteta classily swept home from the edge of the area after Barkley had been tackled.

The tempo slowed in the second period with the home side happy to sit on the two-goal cushion. Ross Barkley went closest to widening the lead with a long-range strike well saved by Simonsen before he was withdrawn to a standing ovation.

It ended 3-1 and we are comfortably though to Saturday's third round draw. Plenty of positives to take from the night - not least the first ninety minutes played by Marouane Fellaini since February.

Barkley (again) showed us a glimpse of what could be a very bright future, Tony Hibbert put in an impressive performance on his 250th Everton start and Mikel Arteta gave us hope that he can return to his scintillating best.

StickyToffee Player Ratings: Mucha 6, Hibbert 8, Jagielka 6, Heitinga 6, Baines 6, Rodwell 6, Fellaini 6, Arteta 7, Osman 6, Barkley 7, Anichebe 6.

Subs: Saha 5, Baxter 4, Neville 4.

Barkley, Rodwell Called Up

17-year-old Ross Barkley is set to join clubmate Jack Rodwell on the international stage after the duo were called up to the England U21 squad for the forthcoming games against Azerbaijan and Israel.

Boss Stuart Pearce has named a 27-man squad for the two games and it includes a host of fresh faces, one of which is midfielder Barkley.

England face Azerbaijan in their opening group 8 game at Vicarage Road on Thursday, 1st September before playing a friendly with Israel on Monday, 5th September at Barnsley.

The full squad is; Ben Amos, Jack Butland, Declan Rudd, Nathan Baker, Joe Bennett, Matthew Briggs, Steven Caulker, Craig Dawson, John Flanagan, Phil Jones, Martin Kelly, Kyle Walker, Andre Wisdom, Ross Barkley, Dan Gosling, Jordan Henderson, Emmanuel Frimpong, Henri Lansbury, Josh McEachran, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Jack Rodwell, Jonjo Shelvey, Nathan Delfouneso, Marvin Sordell, Martyn Waghorn, Danny Welbeck, Connor Wickham.

Duffy In Republic U21 Squad

Everton defender Shane Duffy has been called up to the Republic of Ireland U21 squad for the forthcoming UEFA Under-21 Championships qualifiers against Hungary and Turkey.

The Republic youngsters will host Hungary at the Showgrounds, Sligo, on Thursday, September 1 before travelling to Manisa to take on Turkey on Tuesday, September 6.

Duffy was part of the side that beat Austria 2-1 in a friendly earlier this month, and manager Noel King has stuck with 15 of the players that were in that squad.

King is keen to build on an impressive performance against the Austrians but knows that his charges will face a tough test against Hungary.

"It's always nice to get off to a good start in a qualifying group but nobody will be qualified on the first day. It's a lengthy process to reach the finals but we'll obviously be looking to start as well as possible.

"I've watched Hungary several times. I saw them at the Toulon tournament during the Summer and have looked at quite a few DVDs. They're an excellent side with players playing top division in their own country and the Bundesliga.

"The players enjoyed the Austria game and we were all delighted with how it went so we'll be looking to achieve a similar result and performance this time around."

The full Republic of Ireland squad is; Ian McLoughlin, Aaron McCarey, Lanre Oyebanjo, Shane Duffy, Gavin Gunning, Rob Kiernan, Niall Canavan, Aidan White, Richie Towell, Mark Connolly, Adam Barton, Conor Clifford, James McCarthy, Jeff Hendrick, Aaron Doran, Robbie Brady, Sean Scannell, Joe Mason.

Rumour: Chelsea Youngster In On Loan?

Everton could make a move for Chelsea youngster Patrick van Aanholt, according to the Daily Mirror.

Moyes watched the young Dutchman play for Chelsea's reserves as they won 0-1 at Bolton on Tuesday night and may look to bring in the versatile player on loan.

Van Aanholt, 20, has had previous loan spells at Coventry, Newcastle and Leicester and would provide cover for Leighton Baines at left-back.

The Dutch U21 international can also fill in on the left hand side of midfield.

Everton v Sheffield United Preview

After succumbing to a home defeat at the hands of Premier League new-boys QPR, Everton are quickly back in action in midweek with a Carling Cup tie against League One side Sheffield United.

The Blades have made a rather better start to their league campaign, unbeaten in their opening four games with an impressive 10 points that leave them in third place on goal difference.

As we are Everton, we have already managed to pick up a significant number of injuries from playing our single league game. Jermaine Beckford, Louis Saha (surprise surprise) and Tim Cahill have been labelled doubts for Wednesday's game, whilst Seamus Coleman and Magaye Gueye are definitely out and Diniyar Bilyaletdinov is suspended.

That means that an already struggling forward line could have to rely on youngsters such as Conor McAleny and Apostolos Vellios or out-of-favour duo Victor Anichebe and Yakubu.

My team (assuming the trio of 'doubtful' players do not play) would be:

The tie will see centre-half Phil Jagielka face his old club and he is sure to get a warm reception from all four corners of the ground. A fans' favourite at Bramall Lane, Jagielka won the club's player of the year award three times on the bounce before moving to Everton.

Also facing his former club will be Sheffield United goalkeeper Steve Simonsen (above), who was signed by Everton in 1998 for a fee in excess of £3m, but failed to establish himself as number one at Goodison before moving to Stoke City in 2004.

It is of course a game we should win but given our poor start to the season and recent record in the cups mean we are not as clear favourites as one might assume. David Moyes will surely play a strong team as he bids to win his first piece of silverware in his decade-spanning tenure with the club.

STAT'S LIFE
Welcome to the second set of stats in this new feature for the 2011/12 campaign:
  • Should Everton score once (or more) against Sheffield United, they will have netted 200 goals against the Blades in all competitions.
  • Everton's win percentage in matches against Sheffield United at Goodison Park is just over 57%.
  • If selected, Tony Hibbert will be making his 250th Everton start.
  • This is the fourth meeting of the sides in the League Cup. Everton have won two of the previous three fixtures.
  • Everton last exited the League Cup at the second round stage in 2001, when they were beaten on penalties by Crystal Palace.
_________________________________________________

We should have enough to beat Sheffield United - although we said the same thing against QPR and in previous cup ties against Oldham and Reading (amongst others). It will not be an easy fixture but I am going to predict an Everton win (before we get beat at Blackburn in Round 3).

StickyToffee Prediction: Everton 3-0 Sheffield United

Cahill In For Socceroos

Everton midfielder Tim Cahill has been called up to the Australian squad for the upcoming 2014 World Cup qualifying matches with Thailand and Saudi Arabia.

Cahill is one of seven English-based players in Holger Osieck's 23-man squad and has the opportunity to break a long-standing Everton record.

After scoring against Wales recently, Cahill's tally of international goals whilst at Everton reached 18 - the same as a certain Dixie Dean.

Cahill will look to break the record against Thailand (September 2) in Brisbane or against Saudi Arabia (September 6) in Dammamm. The squad also includes ex-Everton defender Lucas Neill, who this week joined UAE side Al Jazira.

The full Australia squad is as follows: Tim Cahill, Nathan Coe, Luke DeVere, Brett Emerton, Adam Federici, Brett Holman, Mile Jedinak, Josh Kennedy, Neil Kilkenny, Robbie Kruse, Scott McDonald, Matthew McKay, Mark Milligan, Lucas Neill, Sasa Ognenovski, Adam Sarota, Mark Schwarzer, Matthew Spiranovic, James Troisi, Carl Valeri, Luke Wilkshire, Rhys Williams, Michael Zullo.

Everton Reserves 0-2 Fulham Reserves

An Everton reserve side including Nigerian pair Yakubu and Joseph Yobo lost 0-2 to Fulham in their second league fixture this afternoon.

Yobo and Yakubu were both included in the starting line-up for the behind-closed-doors league fixture at Finch Farm, despite the former reported to be on the verge of signing for Turkish giants Fenerbahce.

The full Everton side was: Davies; Garbutt, Yobo, Duffy, Browning; Forshaw, Wallace, Baxter, Orenuga; Yakubu, Vellios.

Alexander Brister gave the Cottagers the lead five minutes into the second half and Courtney Harris grabbed the second shortly afterwards.

Everton failed to recover from the two quickfire goals and the match finished 0-2.

Everton Reserves: Davies, Browning (Mustafi 56), Garbutt, Duffy, Yobo, Orenuga, Baxter, Wallace, Forshaw, Vellios, Yakubu.

Fulham Reserves: Bettinelli, Passley, Smith, Arthurworrey (Dean 73), Burn, Pritchard, Brister, Harris, Donegan (Minkwitz 64), Frei, Kacaniklic.

Goals: Brister 50, Harris 55.

Rumour: Everton Eye Birmingham Defender

SkySports.com understand that Everton have joined Celtic in the hunt for Birmingham City defender Liam Ridgewell.

Ridgewell is likely to leave the Midlands club before the close of the transfer window and could be a replacement for Phil Jagielka, should he leave to join Arsenal.

The 27-year-old helped Birmingham to the League Cup title last year but Birmingham may sell after relegation to the Championship.

Celtic are also thought to be interested as they try to bring in cover for Emilio Izaguirre, who is set for a prolonged spell on the sidelines, whilst Everton could make a move for Ridgewell if either of Phil Jagielka and Leighton Baines leave the club.

Everton 0-1 QPR

New season. Same Everton.

That was the overriding feeling of fans exiting Goodison Park yesterday, after a first-half Tommy Smith strike had compounded a miserable Summer on the blue half of Merseyside.

Many expected QPR to be rolled over following their opening-day hammering at home to Bolton, but an accomplished defensive performance from the visitors combined with a toothless one from the hosts handed the Londoners their first points back in the top-flight.

After last season's home results against the 'lesser sides', coupled with our record at the start of the season, perhaps we were a little overconfident. QPR must be praised for their performance though - they were much more defensively sound than last weekend and inflicted our fourth consecutive opening day defeat, a club 'record'.

With injuries to wide players the line-up was always going to be a case of 'square pegs, round holes', but even so it was an uninspiring one.

The back five picked itself (Howard; Neville, Jagielka, Distin, Baines), but the rest of the side caused quite a shock. Jack Rodwell started on the right wing, with John Heitinga and Leon Osman in the centre and debutant Ross Barkley on the left. Tim Cahill supported Jermaine Beckford up top.

Arteta, Fellaini and Saha were all on the bench. It was to do with a lack of fitness I assume, but it came as a shock after being told that all three were ready for the season.

QPR started the game reasonably well and Tommy Smith went close with a snapshot on the half-volley that flew just wide of Tim Howard's post. Everton responded with a series of crosses, from one of which Beckford attempted an overhead kick - but got it all wrong.

Jack Rodwell went down in front of the Gwladys Street in what looked a decent penalty shout. The referee was having none of it, however, and having seen the replays I am inclined to agree with him. Not a penalty for me, although I have most certainly seen them given.

Everton's best chance came from a familiar outlet - a Leighton Baines free-kick. The left-back was handed the opportunity by the excellent Ross Barkley, who jinked past a host of QPR defenders on the edge of the area before being brought down.

Baines smashed the resulting set-piece against the underside of the crossbar before the ball bounced agonisingly over the Everton players following up.

Just as the home side looked to have a hold on the game, we fell behind. Phil Jagielka squandered possession on the edge of the box and Everton failed to clear before Tommy Smith swivelled and finished instinctively into the bottom corner.

Tim Cahill uncharacteristically missed a header from close-range before the break and Everton could have had another penalty for a push on Cahill by Fitz Hall.

Everton emerged early for the second half and straight-away had a good chance to draw level. Jack Rodwell was sent through after Ross Barkley had cleverly left a pass, but the England U21 midfielder wasted the opening with a weak shot.

David Moyes had the crowd in disbelief as he replaced Jermaine Beckford, meaning that we were chasing the game without a recognised striker.

His replacement, Marouane Fellaini, immediately carved out a chance for Tim Cahill, whose angled shot was saved by Paddy Kenny.

Louis Saha came on for the final 15 minutes, but a Ross Barkley long-range effort was the closest we came to rescuing a point. 0-1 it ended, a fourth consecutive opening day defeat and a thoroughly frustrating afternoon.

But hey, what did we expect? It's the start of the season, after all.

StickyToffee Player Ratings: Howard 5, Baines 6, Distin 6, Jagielka 4, Neville 5, Barkley 7, Heitinga 4, Osman 4, Rodwell 4, Cahill 4, Beckford 4.

Subs: Arteta 4, Fellaini 5, Saha 4.

Skipper Lands New Deal

Everton captain Phil Neville has signed a contract extension with the club, keeping him at Goodison until 2013.

The skipper signed the deal on Saturday morning ahead of the loss to QPR and will now be playing for the club until the age of 36.

His old contract had been set to expire at the end of the season.

Speaking to evertontv, Neville said: "I feel really proud and this club has never let me down. It's shown faith in me again and for the next two years I'm going to give my all for this football club.

"That's what I've done for the last six years and that's what I'll continue to do."

Everton v QPR Preview

Everton belatedly begin their Premier League campaign on Saturday, having not played last week due to panic on the streets of London. We still managed to have a better opening weekend than QPR though - Saturday's opponents were thumped 0-4 at home to Bolton.

After waiting so long for the return of the football season, the postponement of the Spurs match came as an obvious disappointment. There are some positives that we can take out of it though, something I have gone into further detail on here.

The extra week has seen the return to fitness of the best little Spaniard we know, Mikel Arteta, meaning that the only absentees are Seamus Coleman and Magaye Gueye (both injured) and Diniyar Bilyaletdinov, who is suspended following his dismissal against West Brom at the tail end of last season.

Our opponents have plenty of injury and suspension troubles of their own; Jamie Mackie still hasn't recovered from a broken leg he suffered last season, Clint Hill was shown red in the defeat to Bolton and Kieron 'glass ankles' Dyer lasted all of 4 minutes into his QPR debut before being stretchered off.

It has been a turbulent week for Everton and The Blue Union's interview with Bill Kenwright proved very interesting indeed. The Chairman confirmed Evertonians' fears that we have large debts that need to be addressed before we are able to invest in the club, and that banks are becoming less and less willing to support us in the way of loans.

It looks as if we are in for a tough few years unless a sugar daddy comes along and the interview has compounded a Summer of frustration and stagnation on the blue half of Merseyside.

On the pitch, Everton hastily arranged a friendly with Irish side Bohemians following the cancellation of the Spurs fixture. On a rain-soaked Monday night in Dublin, Everton took the lead thanks to a poacher's goal from Jermaine Beckford - his first goal of pre-season - but were pegged back by a fine individual effort from Anto Flood.

For the first half of the game we had nigh on 70% possession but just a single shot on goal - let's hope it doesn't prove to be the same old story throughout the coming season.

Saturday looks sure to be an interesting game - how will both sides respond to off-the-field worries and an opening day drubbing respectively? The newly-promoted Hoops may be reeling from the crushing defeat to Bolton and they do have a few players who could hurt us.

Jay Bothroyd took a tour of Finch Farm in the Summer but Everton were unwilling to match his wage demands. He may regret that decision but, although I for one am glad we swerved him, he and DJ Campbell are a lively front duo.

However, QPR's main man is clearly Moroccan magician Adel Taarabt. If we can nullify him - as Bolton did so effectively last week - we nullify a large proportion of QPR's attacking threat. I suspect Marouane Fellaini will be asked to do a job on him in a defensive midfield position.

STAT'S LIFE
Welcome to a new feature for the new season - 5 of the best stats in each and every match preview!
  • Everton have lost 99 home matches in the Premier League - let's hope QPR don't make it 100!
  • Our last seven league goals have been scored in the second half.
  • If selected, Tony Hibbert will be making his 250th Everton start. Perfect time to break his goalscoring duck!
  • Everton have not kept a clean sheet in their opening fixture since 1998.
  • A defeat would mean four successive opening day losses - which would be an unwanted record.
_________________________________________________

It is a fixture we should most definitely look to win, although we are Everton and we never ever do things the easy way. Just ask West Brom, West Ham, Wolves, Birmingham, Reading etc.

I am going to predict an Everton win though - Jermaine Beckford and Mikel Arteta to get to goals.

Rumour: Young Winger Set For PAOK Loan

19-year-old midfielder Araz Abdullayev may be loaned to Greek side PAOK, according to various sources in his homeland, Azerbaijan, and potential destination, Greece.

The teenager, who is Azerbaijan's youngest ever full international (16 years 4 months), is not officially an Everton player, although we look set to sign him providing he can obtain a work permit.

Various sources, including Azerbaijani football website azfutbol.com and Twitter account @greekfooty, report that the youngster will be loaned to POAK whilst Everton attempt to resolve the permit issues.

Difficult Times But Keep The Faith

The week I welcome guest poster Mark Pendleton to the blog. He has very kindly penned an article airing his views on our financial situation and our hopes for the future.

Have we actually got it right?

Now, before I start, let me state that I too am frustrated with the lack of progress in terms of new playing staff and, in particular, a new stadium. Perhaps more concerning are the stories of more deep-rooted financial issues, issues that have put paid to past stadium schemes and even the recent Park End development.

I would also like to state that I am in full support of the manager and I believe we have a great core group of players. I also believe that we have a good man in charge of the club (few rational minds could dispute this, if they take a considered view it's only his commercial acumen they could seriously call into question).

So, why then are we being eclipsed in terms of spending by clubs widely perceived to be smaller than our own - both top-flight newcomers and more recently established Premier League clubs such as Sunderland and Stoke City?

We have an average attendance to rival many clubs in the upper echelons of the league, a bigger "brand name" than many others and a playing squad that, although thin, contains many big-name players.

So how do these other clubs, who all seem to have (or have plans for) a new stadium and who are able to invest in multi-million pound signings year on year, retain the ability to keep on spending?
_________________________________________________

Robert Elstone commented that 9% of our corporate facilities remain unsold. Why then do we cite more corporate facilities as a need for a new stadium?
_________________________________________________

If we look a bit closer, I think that, despite the frustration that seems to have grown via osmosis in fan groups we have many of the pieces in place (more of that in a sec). The club's debt is something I cannot disagree with in terms of the scale. It is a millstone that we must live with and we need to generate more income to reduce it if we are to live within our means and compete in the long run - rather than adding to it and being pressured into selling the family silver.

I was especially concerned recently with Robert Elstone's comments that 9% of our corporate facilities remain unsold - why then do we cite more corporate facilities as a major reason as to why we need a new stadium?

Ah yes, the pieces we have in place...

We have consistently finished highly in the league over the last few years and any player sales have not been forced on the manager. We have also managed to keep hold of a number of key players by offering them higher salaries.

The clubs we are using as benchmarks in terms of player spend have seen players come and go more readily in my opinion. They do not seem to be able to keep their best players and develop the stable playing squad with the collective attitude that has seen our team achieve a level greater than the sum of its parts.

Our playing squad has a collective attitude that has seen the team achieve a level greater than the sum of its parts.
_________________________________________________

This, I believe, is partly due to their club statures and partly due to the fact that they only invest sporadically in transfer fees whilst we attempt to pay better salaries. In addition, youth development is more of a priority at Everton.

We have a state of the art training ground (whether we "own" it or not) and it attracts and produces some of the country's finest young talent - as does the fact that we are a club renowned for giving young players a chance.

I am far more proud to see the Rodwells, Barkleys and Colemans at our great club than I am some foreign journeyman who we laud the signing of even though we've never heard of him, who's far past his best and who's name we can pronounce.

The players we have largely want to stay and in most cases the reason is not money. The likes of Cahill, Baines, Arteta and Jagielka wouldn't be on long-term deals at the club if it was not a great place to play football - arguably any of the afore-mentioned players could attract a higher salary elsewhere.

Yes, these are difficult times and yes, we need investment. But it's not all bad and there are many clubs with more money than us that, try as they might, simply cannot buy what we have. Keep the faith, we are born not manufactured. COYB.

In memory of my late Grandfather, John Pendleton, a lifelong Evertonian who sadly passed away on 14th August at the age of 89. He grew up watching Dixie Dean and saw the establishment of the school of science. A fantastic footballer in his day and a great man until his end. Sadly missed.

Rumour: Beckford Wants Stay Despite Championship Interest

Jermaine Beckford wants to stay at Goodison Park despite interest from a number of Championship sides, according to skysports.com.

Southampton, Nottingham Forest, West Ham United and Leicester City have all expressed an interest in signing the striker, with the latter believed to have tabled a £3m bid.

Beckford ended last season (his debut campaign in the top-flight) as Everton's joint top-scorer after netting 10 goals, a haul that included a Roy of the Rovers effort to seal a final-day victory over Chelsea.

Sky Sports are reporting that David Moyes may be willing to sell Beckford for the right price, but that the player is happy at the club and will only look for a move if he is told to move on.

West Brom Reserves 2-2 Everton Reserves

Two Everton goals in the space of as many minutes earned Everton reserves a point against West Bromwich Albion in the first game of the new campaign.

Conor McAleny and Yakubu scored Everton's goals in the 73rd and 75th minutes respectively to salvage Everton a point after efforts from West Brom's James Hurst and Saido Berahino had left the visitors 2-0 down.

Goalscorer Yakubu and fellow Nigerian Joseph Yobo were the most experienced names on the Everton teamsheet, and both played the full game in the behind-closed-doors fixture.

In the opening exchanges both James Wallace and Conor McAleny had efforts saved, but the Blues fell behind on 38 minutes to a James Hurst volley.

Despite suffering that setback Everton continued to attack and further chances fell to Yakubu and Femi Orenuga, whilst Yobo went close from a free-kick.

Youngster Berahino doubled the Baggies' advantage with a 68th minute tap-in, but Everton again responded well and were rewarded shortly afterwards.

A left-wing cross from Jake Bidwell was headed home by McAleny and just two minutes later the Blues were level as Yakubu's neat finish rescued a deserved point.

West Bromwich Albion: Fulop; Jones, McAuley, Ibanez (Downing 45), Mattock (Gayle 72); Hurst (Edge 85), Thorne, Mantom, O'Neil; Sawyers, Berahino. Subs not used: Daniels, Goldsmith.

Everton: Davies; Browning, Yobo, Mustafi, Bidwell; Orenuga, Wallace, Baxter, Forshaw; McAleny, Yakubu. Subs not used: Roberts, Duffy, Nsiala, Forrester, Higgins.

Rumour: Everton Target Duo

Everton are interested in signing Tottenham midfielder Niko Kranjcar as well as Belgium U21 starlet Christian Benteke, according to the Sunday People.

Boss David Moyes is hoping to secure a loan deal for Croatian midfield star Kranjcar, although any move depends on whether Tottenham can keep hold of Kranjcar's fellow Croatian, Luka Modric.

The paper also claims that Everton were snubbed last week by both Scott Parker and Matthew Upson, the latter of whom opted for a move to Stoke. It is claimed that Parker is looking for a 'bigger' club.

Good luck with that, Scott.

In order to solve our striking problems, the same paper says that Everton have switched their attention to young Belgian forward Christian Benteke.

The 20-year-old, who scored a brace for Belgium U21 in front of Everton scouts last week, would cost in the region of £1 million - an amount that looks set to be raised by the sale of Joseph Yobo.

Rumour: Spaniard Available For Nothing

SkySports.com understands that Everton and Sunderland are interested in signing former Valencia winger Vicente, who is now a free agent.

The experienced Spaniard, who has made almost 300 appearances in the Spanish top-flight, is available on a free transfer after his contract with Valencia expired this Summer.

The player has reportedly had offers from La Liga clubs but it is understood that the Spanish international would fancy a chance to test himself in the English Premier League.

As well as Everton, the 30-year-old has been linked with Blackburn, Newcastle, Swansea and Sunderland this Summer.

With Everton manager David Moyes short of cash, Vicente could be a viable option.

What would you think of Everton signing Vicente? Leave your thoughts in the comment section below.

Blades, Bohemians and a Blessing in Disguise?

Three bits of Everton-related news for me to discuss in today's post. Unfortunately (and unsurprisingly) none is transfer-related, but important news nonetheless.

We'll start with the match at Tottenham.

Actually, we won't, because a moronic minority rioting over the shooting of a man carrying a loaded gun have caused such ugly scenes in the capital that our opening day fixture with Spurs has had to be postponed due to "safety concerns relating to the infrastructure of the High Road and access to the stadium".

After waiting for this game ever since the fixture list was revealed back in June, and having secured my ticket for the big opening day, I was naturally disappointed (if not surprised) when I heard of the postponement.

However, having had time to chew it over, I am hopeful that it may prove something of a blessing in disguise.

There are a couple of reasons behind my thinking. The first is that it will allow us to get some of our players back fit. Mikel Arteta had looked set to miss the Tottenham clash with a foot injury, but Everton are hopeful he will be fit in time for the QPR game.

Marouane Fellaini may be another beneficiary of the additional week of pre-season. A while back it had been feared that the Belgian would not fully recover (from the injury he suffered against Sunderland last season) until October-time.

These fears were quelled when he featured throughout Everton's pre-season, although he was taken off at half time in Belgium's 0-0 draw with Slovenia on Wednesday night having looked somewhat off the pace. An extra week should do him good.

Seamus Coleman will miss a large part of the season after tearing a ligament in his ankle, but the postponed fixture is still one less match that the Irishman will be out for.

Aside from player injuries, the postponement will mean that we start the season at home against QPR. Everton are renowned for being perennial slow-starters, but a home fixture against a newly-promoted side looks very winnable.

In no way do I wish to underestimate Neil Warnock's side - and I am fully aware that there are 'no easy games in the Premier League' - but it is most certainly a fixture we should be winning.

We then face a trip to Blackburn and home games against Aston Villa and Wigan before our annual three points at the Etihad (formerly City of Manchester) Stadium.

I repeat the fact that there are no easy games, but Tottenham away is certainly 'harder' than QPR at home. Hopefully a home game will enable us to start a campaign well, for once.

Surely a win before September isn't too much to ask?

On to the other piece of news from yesterday, which is that Everton have been handed a home tie against Sheffield United in the Second Round of the Carling Cup.

Undoubtedly the highlight of last night's draw was Trevor Francis' face when hosts Ben Shephard asked the ex-Birmingham striker to "give those balls a fiddle please Trevor."

Francis pulled Everton's number 6 cube (yes, cube, not ball) out to hand us a home tie against the League One Blades. The tie will see Phil Jagielka and Steve Simonsen face their old clubs and will be played on Wednesday, 24th August.

The draw was seeded and so we were always set to avoid the 'big-hitters'. This meant that more than anything else I was hoping for a home draw - which is what we got.

The game should provide a comfortable passage into round 3 although we cannot afford to take our lower-league opponents lightly - as, amongst others, Oldham, Reading and Shrewsbury will testify.

The Carling Cup is always Everton's best chance of silverware and I expect David Moyes to really go for it this year as he attempts to win his first trophy in his 10-year affiliation with the club.

Onto the third snippet of news, which has only emerged while I have been writing this post. It is that Everton have announced a friendly against Irish side Bohemians on Monday night.

The announcement follows the postponement of our clash with Spurs - and should keep our players sharp as we head into what will now be our Premier League opener with QPR.

Let's just hope we don't pick up anymore injuries...

Blues To Face Bohemians

Everton have announced that they will contest a friendly match with Irish side Bohemians on Monday night after the club's Premier League opener with Tottenham Hotspur was postponed.

The game will take place at the 3,000 capacity Dalymount Park at 7:45pm, and will enable David Moyes to test his squad's fitness prior to Everton's first league match with QPR.

The Irish opponents are in mid-season and currently lie in 6th place in the 10-team Airtricity League. Seamus Coleman's old side Sligo Rovers are top.
