Heitinga's Dutch Lose out on Penalties

John Heitinga's Netherlands side lost on penalties to Uruguay last night in Montevideo, after the ninety minutes ended with the score at 1-1.

The Netherlands, on a mini-tour of South America, fell behind on 82 minutes to a Luis Suarez goal. It was another player from across the park who equalised, with Dirk Kuyt's header in extra time bringing the Dutch level. The sides were competing for the Copa Confraternidad trophy and so the match was to be decided on penalties.

Uruguay prevailed 4-3 in the shoot-out after Elia and van Persie missed their spot-kicks, although Everton's Heitinga did put away his penalty.
